Location: The Monte Negro Ranch is located about 35 miles northwest of Socorro, New Mexico. Albuquerque, New Mexico’s largest city, is only 55 miles to the north. The ranch is situated at the northeast base of Ladron Peak, which is 9,176 feet in elevation. The ranch is partially bounded on the south by the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge for approximately four and one half miles. The headquarters is located approximately 12 miles west of Interstate-25 at Bernardo.

Socorro Municipal Airport serves the area with a 5,841’ paved runway at an elevation of 4,875’.

The County was named for the community of Socorro, NM. Socorro County, with 6,626 square miles, ranks third in size among the state's 33 counties. The estimated population in 2004 was 18,177. This was an increase of 0.55% from the 2000 census.

The City of Socorro provides most major services including shopping, banking, dining, hardware, farm and ranch supplies, etc. and is home of New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology.

Water: There are a total of 5 wells on the ranch: 4 windmills; 3 of which also have submersible pumps. The 5th well is solar powered. The ranch also has 5 earthen tanks. In addition to storage at the wells, there is one 20,000 and one 10,000 gallon storage tanks, which are both connected to approximately 7 miles of pipeline.


Headquarters: The home is a 16 x 70, 3 bedroom, 2 bath mobile with an attached front porch. At the headquarters area there is a set of good pipe corrals, including a squeeze chute and covered stalls. Wildlife: Dove, Quail, Mule deer, and occasionally Elk can all be found on the Monte Negro Ranch.

Topography: The majority of the ranch is from about 5,000 feet to 5,500 feet in elevation. The ranch consists of hills and canyons tapering off to open, rolling prairies. Scattered juniper trees dot the landscape across much of the hills and canyon lands.

Their are several spectacular building sites and an unbelievable elevated, panoramic view of the Middle Rio Grande Valley, Chicken Mountain, Los Pinos Mountains, Manzano Mountains, Sandia Mountains, and of course, Ladron Peak.
